River wood graduate story

Leadership is defined as the ability to guide a team to achieve a goal.

Whether it be a staff member, teacher, or student, the leadership demonstrated in schools has great power in bringing positivity, change, kindness, and growth in the school environment.

For Oakland Heights Elementary student River Woods, serving others is a significant part of leadership. On the playground, in the lunchroom, and in every learning opportunity, River strives to lead by example in being helpful and kind.

Oakland Heights Elementary School Principal, Sheri Shirley says River is a student who continuously shows such quiet determination to help other students learn and lead with empathy and positivity.

One great example of River’s leadership is a recent interaction observed in P.E. River was partnered with a student struggling with throwing a frisbee. While many would have entered the situation with frustration, River decided to pause and provide help. River took the other student to a quiet corner of the gym and coached the student one on one until the student was successful.

River was recognized at the February  RSD Board of Education Meeting for being an Empathetic Leader! This recognition comes from the RSD Profile of the Graduate, which outlines the attributes RSD graduates will encompass when they graduate.
